“One of a kind,” John the orderly told her the following day, “aren’t you, Kate?” He tipped her a wink.

Katie did not respond immediately. Instead, eyes down, her voice barely a whisper, she breathed: “I know about— about—”

John Walker’s eyebrows rose at her tone. “Know about what?” he asked, grinning.

Katie’s pale gaze lifted and met his.

“—about you and Elizabeth. ”

The grin twitched, and died, and slid from his lips like necrotic flesh falling away.

Walker. He did this to me. I was…I am…Elizabeth. This was my home. Is my home still. Look what I have become. I was your age. John Walker befriended me while I was committed here, then betrayed me in the worst way imaginable. Seducing me. Kissing and touching. Pretending he cared for me. But he raped me and impregnated me. And when I threatened to tell, he strangled me. With…bare…hands. Look. Killed the fetus inside of me. Carried my body into the corridors below. There he worked on me, separating me from myself, removing my limbs with a hacksaw so he could get me outside easier. Cut me, put my torso and dismembered extremities into garbage bags. Buried them beneath the tree out there, where I vanish bit by bit and my bones mingle with its roots to this day. No one missed me the night I disappeared, no one cared, and there were no cameras to witness my death as there are now. They assumed I escaped, just ran away. But I am still here, yes. Always. Here. In darkness. Look what I have become. He discarded me, pieces gone forever. My unborn baby yet inside. Such pain. Inside of me. He must pay for what he did. You are in danger.
